I have changed my mind. I don't hate Japanese keyboards nearly as much as I hate the different shortcut keys on Macs and PCs. I had a beautiful long entry, a good hour's worth of work on this dang keyboard, and before I posted, I performed my usual habit of ctrl-C copying it to make sure I could paste it back in if it didn't post correctly.
Except the shortcut key on a Mac is the apple key. So all I did was replace the entire thing with the single hiragana character "so".
My soul weeps.
Before it was destroyed, I had shared with you all my internet troubles, my experiences with this Wednesday's tsunami, my rained-out picnic today with my host family, and my unintentional gate-crashing of a major animation school on Friday. But now it is all lost to the ethers, because Macs also apparently do not have an "undo" key for internet typing. Or at least, Japanese Macs don't. Or if they do, my host mother isn't aware of it.
I will rewrite that elaborate chronicle tomorrow, when I am not so deeply frustrated with typing in general, and typing on this keyboard in particular. Was it really necessary, O Wise Ones of the computer industry, to pick completely different shortcut keys for your products? Or, for that matter, to rearrange the Japanese version's keys until you'd put most of the punctuation marks under the witness protection program and made the right-hand end of the space bar, the end most right-handed Western typers (like me) tend to hit, into the "type in kanji" button, so that every so often my typing ends up ????g????s?
Blehh. I suppose I was bound to angst at least a little in this thing at some point. At least my actual week was awesome. You guys don't mind waiting another 24 hours to hear about it, right?
Thank you.
